What's the difference between nuthatches and blue tits?

  • Nuthatches and blue tits are both common garden and bird feeder visitors but can be mistaken for each other.

  • Both birds can be similar in size, with nuthatches being only slightly larger. Both are primarily blue and have dark eye stripes.

  • Nuthatches have orange/red chests and bellies while blue tits have very yellow bellies.

  • Blue tits have white foreheads.

  • Nuthatches have longer, thinner beaks.

  • Nuthatches often eat upside down on feeders. Blue tits generally eat the right way up.
