What's the difference between
a kayak and a canoe?

What's the difference between canoes and kayaks?

  • Both kayaks and canoes can take one or more paddlers and be used on rivers, lakes and the sea.

  • Canoe paddles have only one blade while kayak paddles have a blade at each end.

  • Canoes tend to have an open deck while kayaks tend to have a closed deck but can also have open decks.

  • Kayaks tend to be faster and more suited to rough water.

  • In canoes, paddlers sit on seats (or can kneel) with knees bent, in kayaks, paddlers sit on the floor of the boat with legs outstretched.
