What's the difference between
a centipede
and a millipede?

What's the difference between millipedes and centipedes?

  • Centipedes and millipedes are related, wlthough not closely. As such there are some significant differences between them.

  • I remember learning when I was a child that centipedes had a hundred legs, and millipedes had a million. This isn't true although centipedes certainly looks like they have less legs than millipedes. This is because both millipedes have long bodies divided into segments. Centipedes have one pair of legs (one each side) per body segment, while millipedes have two per body segment.

  • Centipedes have flat bodies while millipedes have cylindrical bodies like a tube.

  • Both millipedes and centipedes can be found hiding under stones. Centipedes tend to run off very quickly, while millipedes move much more slowly and tend to bury themselves in the earth.
