What's the difference between great tits and coal tits?

  • Coal tits and great tits are both common visitors to gardens and bird feeders.

  • Coals tits are smaller than great being 11.5cm long and 14cm long respectively..

  • Coal tits are not colourful - with a black head, grey wings and a pale, almost beige, belly while great tits are very colourful by comparison with bright yellow bellies and blueish wings and tail.

  • Coal tits have much narrower beaks than great tits.

  • Watching them feed on a bird feeder, it is clear to see that great tits are generlly dominant over coal tits which appear relatively shy and will often wait for great tits to finish feeding before they have a go.
