What's the difference between
a dunnock and a sparrow?

What's the difference between dunnocks and sparrows?

  • Dunnocks and house sparrows are both small brown birds and it can be hard to tell the difference between the female sparrow and a dunnock.

  • An adult dunnock has a grey head and throat which the female sparrow does not.

  • Dunnocks have narrower beaks than sparrows which have the shorter, thicker beak of the finch family.

  • Female sparrows have distinctiove eye stripes, one lighter and one darker, which dunnocks lack.

  • Dunoock chests ade bellies tend to be mottled whereas the sparrow belly is a uniform colour.

  • Both dunnocks and female house sparrows have streaky brown wings.
