What's the difference between
a wasp and a hoverfly?
- Hoverflies effectively mimic by having bright yellow and black stripes which warn off predators.
- Like other flies, hoverflies have only one pair of wings. Wasps have two pairs, a small rear pair behind the main wings.
- Wasps have long, noticeabe antennae which ome out from the sides of their heads. Hoverflies have a tiny pair which comes out from the front of their head.
- Wasps have pronouced waists, Hoverflies do not.
- Wasps have a rounded abdomen, whereas the hoverfly is quite flat.
- Wasps can sting, hoverflies cannot.
