What's the difference between male and female chaffinches?

  • The chaffinch is a very common garden bird.

  • Like in some other birds (such as the sparrow and the bullfinch), the female chaffinch is a muted version of the male.

  • The male and the female have very similar wing markings with white flashes and streaks of yellow.

  • The female, however, is muted greys, browns and creams whereas the male is darker, stronger colours.

  • The male has a deep grey 'helmet' covering his head and the back of his neck, and a black forehead.

  • He has a reddish chest and belly, far darker than the female's beige belly.
