What's the difference between steps and stairs?
- Stairs and steps are examples of similar words that we use in set different ways without even thinking about it.
- We very rarely refer to stairs being outside and will, instead, say steps.
- When we say stairs, we tend to be referring to inside sets of steps.
- When we talk about steps, we tend to be talking about outside steps or just one or two individual steps inside.
- We tend to talk about stairs in terms of flights - a whole set of stairs between one floor and the next. We don't talk about steps in the same way.
- As indoors steps, stairs are often, but not always, carpeted. As steps are generally outside, they are not usually carpeted.
