What's the difference between
a wasp and a hornet?
- A hornet is a member of the wasp family - vespa.
- Hornets are actually the biggest wasps in Europe and dwarf other members of the wasp family.
- A common wasp worker will grow to be about 15 mm long whereas a worker hornet will grow to about 25mm long.
- Common wasps are known for their briht yellow and black colouring while hornets are generally more brown than black.
- Hornet wings and legs can appear reddish.
- Both ommon wasps and hornet sting, the latter's sting can be very painful.
